The Best Ways to Renovate Your Terrace

A well-designed terrace is like an oasis of peace in the middle of a busy city. Change up your outdoor space with natural-looking furniture, places to sit, and places to play.

Plant a garden.

A lush rooftop garden instills a sense of serenity and well-being while adding value to your residence. To avoid roof-load and moisture-management issues, consider installing a Zen garden instead of a lawn. This type of garden is also known as a “dry landscape” or “rock garden” because it incorporates gravel, boulders, and rocks with grass, shrubs, and other plants.

Fencing the borders

A city’s densely populated core can make it difficult to maintain privacy. Patios feel cozier when using natural materials such as wood slat fencing or other similar solutions. It’s possible to create a private terrace by planting tall plants along the fence. Separate areas with jute sheets or creepers strung on a wire trellis.

Put some plants on the wall.

Use architectural features like parapets, walls, and dividers, which may seem restrictive, to your advantage to set up a green zone.

Start a small herb or flower garden with old cans and containers framed on the wall or a rack, or hang potted plants from the ceiling.

Repurpose it as a spa with a Jacuzzi.

Make use of the terrace by installing a hot tub or a jacuzzi to create a makeshift spa.

Place a wooden deck around the tub where you can set up a beach chair or lounge around with some cushions. Replace wood with low-maintenance tiles or stone if you live in a place with a lot of humidity or rain.

Hang a hammock out.

Even the tiniest terrace becomes my ideal place to relax when I put a swing or a hammock on it. Is there anything more relaxing than lying in a hammock with a long, cool drink and a good book? You can’t go wrong with hammocks or swing chairs for a sense of fun and relaxation.

Build a pergola bar.

Install a pergola to transform your patio into an outdoor bar or barbecue area. Set up a decorative pergola with a glass roof, cross-beams, and pillars for structural support. Outdoor furniture remains dry and protected when covered in glass on rainy days.

Light it up!

Brighten your terrace with sconces or even lights that shine on your plants.

Add a birdhouse.

Make the most of the openness to the sky by inviting some birds into your space. With a simple birdhouse, you can enjoy the sights and sounds of nature from the comfort of your home. As long as there’s room, you could also set up a stone or earthen pond for your birds.
