10 Important Kitchen Dimensions You Should Know

Whether they are built from scratch or assembled from modules, kitchens must be functional and ergonomic to ensure that their inhabitants can complete their tasks with ease and efficiency. We have listed some standard ergonomic kitchen dimensions that should be used to create a well-planned and functional kitchen design. So if you want to take on the challenge of designing your kitchen, don’t be afraid; be confident. Everything you need to know about typical kitchen dimensions can be found in this article.

1. Height of kitchen countertop

The height of the gas stove should be such that a person does not exert any strain on their back while standing and working. The standard height of the kitchen countertop for Indian kitchens is around 34 inches. By rule of thumb, there should be a gap of 4 inches between the top of the countertop and the elbow when you are standing.

2. Depth of kitchen countertop

The standard depth of a kitchen countertop and the lower cabinets and drawer units should be 2 feet. Do note that the depth of the countertop may vary, depending on the size of the kitchen appliances, such as the gas stove or cooking range, that have to be installed.

3. Distance between countertop and upper cabinets

The minimum clearance between the kitchen countertop and the upper cabinets ranges between 24 and 27 inches.

4. Depth of overhead cabinets

Above-range cupboards should be between 12 and 15 inches deep. These cupboards are shallower, so the user won’t hit their head on them while they’re working. If you want to install an overhead cabinet above your fridge, make sure it’s at least 24 inches deep, preferably at the same depth as your fridge.

5. Width of panels of upper and lower cabinets

In most cases, the upper and lower halves of a cabinet are separated by a horizontal line (as depicted here), with the result that a double-door cabinet can have a width of between 30 and 36 inches. Each sliding panel has a maximum width of 2 feet.

6. Distance between stove and chimney

About 26-30 inches of clearance is required between the bottom of the chimney and the gas stove. The chimney’s efficiency will suffer as a result.

7. Dimensions for refrigerator

There are a wide variety of refrigerators to choose from. Therefore, it is practical to settle on the model of the refrigerator first and record its dimensions. Make sure there is at least 2 inches of space above the fridge and 2 inches of space between the fridge and the wall to allow for proper ventilation and heat dissipation.

8. Maximum height of microwave

The ideal height for a microwave’s base is between 13 and 18 inches above the countertop. This measurement can be altered to suit your needs and preferences.

9. Minimum width for circulation

When designing a kitchen layout, make sure there are at least 4 feet of working space (circulation) between adjacent countertops. If it’s any less, it won’t be wide enough to accommodate two people working together.

10. Kitchen sink clearance

The drain board that fits into most sinks is located on the right-hand side of the sink. On the other hand, there needs to be at least three feet for the drying utensils to be comfortable. In addition, this facilitates the separation of used and clean dishes.
